In January 2007 Christ Kennicott Water Technology Ltd successfully commissioned and handed over a new high efficiency boiler feedwater and condensate treatment plant to UPM Kymmene’s CHP project at Shotton Paper Mill, Deeside, UK.
UPM’s paper mill at Shotton produces newsprint based on recycled fiber. Recycled newspapers and magazines gathered from public recycle centre around the UK are sent to UPM’s Shottons paper mill in North Wales where they are recycled for re-use. Instead of landfilling, the unusable part of recycled paper will be burned with an advanced combustion technology and used for renewable energy production for the Mill.
UPM is a leading biofuel user in the world with approximately 60% of their fuel coming from biofuels. This project will further increase the biofuel usage and underscores UPM’s reputation for commitment to ‘greener energy’
New bubbling fluidised bed (BFB) boilers and auxillary equipment including a new water treatment system now provide UPM with sufficient heat and power to increase their self- sufficiency by upto 90% and 25% respectively. Carbon Dioxide emissions will be reduced by 30,000 tonnes /year.
To meet the stringent feedwater quality requirements of the new boilers and turbines, Christ Kennicott installed a high efficiency Amberpack packed bed ion exchange plant designed to produce upto 144m3/hr of boiler makeup. Prior to the IX plant the incoming feedwater was passed through large 3.8m diameter multi media pressure filters to remove particulates.
The returning steam condensate is also treated by filtration and ion exchange condensate polishing to ensure the water conductivity remains < 0.1 microsiemens.

The 2 x 72m3/hr new boiler feedwater
water treatment plant comprises:
- Multi Media Filtration
- Cation , Degasser, Anion exchangers (packed bed counter-current )
- Mixed Bed ion exchange plant ( packed bed counter-current )
The returning 2 x 90m3/hr Condensate Polishing plant comprises:
- Backwashable cartridge filtration
- Mixed Bed polishing
- A common effluent neutralisation plant
Christ Kennicott are very proud to have participated in this leading ‘Waste to Energy’ project with UPM Kymmene and helping to make a positive contribution to the increased use of renewable energy in the UK.
