Existing Kennicott plant, installed in 1957 and still operating today!
In 1957 Kennicott supplied a dealkalisation ion exchange plant to treat boiler feed water for Ireland’s only Oil Refinery. 50 years later, following a boiler upgrade and a requirement for higher quality feedwater, ConocoPhillips,Ireland have asked Christ Kennicott to design and supply a replacement plant.
The new plant is based on the latest packed bed ion exchange technology ( Reverse Amberpack), utilising dual compartment Cation and Anion vessels to minimise waste chemical production whilst ensuring high quality feedwater to the boiler. Unlike the existing plant, the new plant will be fully automated and controlled via the Refinery’s DCS. The entire plant is custom built to comply with stringent ConocoPhillips engineering specifications, including ASME VIII Div1 ‘U’ Stamp for all pressure vessels.
The new plant has been designed to be installed in parallel with the existing plant to allow for an uninterrupted switch over in early 2008.
The 2 x 65m3/hr plant comprises:
2 x 100% Dual compartment Cation Vessels
2 x 100% Dual Compartment Anion Vessels
Acid and Caustic Regeneration systems
Effluent neutralisation plant
Demineralised water storage tank.
For 50 years the Refinery has relied on Kennicott’s plant to deliver boiler feed water 100% of the time ( there is currently no on site Demin storage tank) – a testament to the absolute reliability and robust design of Christ Kennicott equipment.
