Christ Kennicott chosen to supply new 150 m3/hr boiler feedwater and condensate polishing plant for a major ‘Waste to Energy’ project at leading UK Paper Mill.

Christ Kennicott Water Technology Ltd are delighted to have been selected by UPM Kymmene, Europe’s largest producer of Newsprint to design and build their new high efficiency boiler feedwater and condensate treatment plant at their Shotton Paper Mill, Deeside, UK.

Up against international competition, CKWT were able to demonstrate their capability to design and install modern high performing water treatment plant to meet the stringent water quality standards required for UPM’s new BFB boilers.

UPM are building an advanced ‘waste to energy’ plant based on the combustion of sludge produced from its recovered paper recycling process. New boilers and auxillary equipment including a new water treatment system will provide UPM with sufficient heat and power to increase their self- sufficiency by upto 90% and 25% respectively. Carbon Dioxide emissions will be reduced by 30,000 tonnes /year.

The 2 x 75m3/hr new boiler feedwater water treatment plant comprises:

  • Dual Media Filtration
  • Cation , Degasser, Anion exchangers (packed bed counter-current)
  • Mixed Bed ion exchange plant ( packed bed counter-current)

The returning Condensate also required treatment with the following filtration and ion exchange plant:

  • Backwashable cartridge filtration
  • Mixed Bed polishing
  • A common effluent neutralisation plant

The plant is expected to be commissioned in April 2006.
